BREAKING NEWS: NO MORE MAIL DELIVERY ON SATURDAYS

Gone are the days of making idle small talk with your USPS delivery man on Saturdays.

In their never-ending battle to cut costs, the USPS today announced that starting the week of August 5th, 2013, there will be no more mail delivery on Saturdays.  This new schedule, expected to generate savings of nearly $2 billion annually, will still allow for package delivery Monday through Saturday.

From the press release:
Market research conducted by the Postal Service and independent research by major news organizations indicate that nearly seven out of ten Americans (70 percent) supported the switch to five-day delivery as a way for the Postal Service to reduce costs in its effort to return the organization to financial stability. [1]   Support for this approach will likely be even higher since the Postal Service plans to maintain six-day package delivery.
While this change, along with other structural changes,  produces significant cost savings, there is still work to be done to allow the USPS to control costs and generate more revenue.  Employee reassignment and attrition are some of the effects of this decision (along with your Netflix movie not coming in until Monday).
