PRINT ENCYCLOPEDIA ENTRY #10: PRE-FLIGHT

March 19, 2013 Michael Bland

As we all know, digital jobs have ushered in a new world of convenience, speed, efficiency.  Clearly, the advantages outweigh the occasional snafus. But our diligent pre-media team is here to ensure your job is set-up most accurately to prevent any hiccups in the job.
B&B utilizes a program called Prinergy for preflight operations. It works like a filter to detect and warn when something’s wrong with a job. Omissions are the usual culprits, especially fonts or images. While seemingly elementary, this pre-checking and counting is very important to achieving a clean RIP of your job into our CTP (computer to plate) workflow. If one thing is missing or incompatible, the output is flawed.
Preflight check determines number, names, type, even manufacturer of fonts. And, of course, whether any are missing. A common catch is missing fonts embedded in an EPS file.
This evaluation becomes more complex. Aside from whether a picture is missing (common), preflighting ascertains in minute detail what’s been done to images—skewing, rotating, distorting, silhouetting, etc. All is pertinent to final output. And of course, Prinergy validates DPI resolution for line screen spec’s.
Preflighting easily determines if the planned color usage is supported in the file: i.e., match colors or builds, colors named properly to avoid double-output. Usage in page layout to determine trapping status (text box, picture box, etc.)
While we are here to catch any missing items, it’s always a good idea for you to check your files.  As they say, measure twice, cut once!
